Tk 1. "Dream World": I can't pinpoint exactly why but this song just doesn't hit me right. I don't really like it. Davy's singing is pretty good here, and the music is decent, but I just don't like this song.
Tk 2. "Auntie's Municipal Court": I love Micky's singing here, especially in the chorus -- the blending of the background vocals' harmony is just wonderful. I also love the melody, and for some reason, I love the tambourine part in this (usually I don't even notice the tambourine). This is a great Nez-penned song.
Tk 3. "We Were Made For Each Other": Ewwww . . . yicky sappy Davy song. This one is even sappier than most! Ewwwwwwwwwwww
Tk 4. "Tapioca Tundra": I love this one! Especially the chorus. One day I'm going to have to sit down and think about the meaning, but this song is so pretty I never even think of it. Nez's singing is starting to get really strong here.
Tk 5. "Daydream Believer": I have gotten a little sick of this from overplaying it as a little
kid and from the fact that every concert the guys do, whether it be a regular concert, or a televised
one, they play this, and after a while you can get sick of this song. I do still like it though,
just in moderation. This is one song I can't overplay (unlike "Randy Scouse Git" which I am not
yet sick of after hundreds of playings). This is a great song, though, showing why it was a number
one hit. And, it kinda describes me -- I'm a daydreamer (keeps me from getting bored) and I
believe certain daydreams may come true
Tk 6. "Writing Wrongs": I like this one. Most of the song is a little slow for my tastes,
but then comes the instrumental. I love the drums at the very beginning of that -- but then again
I'm a drummer and that's what I tend to notice first. :-) The piano is great in this -- I wish
I had the sheet music for that instrumental so I could try and learn it!
Tk 7. "I'll Be Back Up On My Feet": I like this version a whole lot better than the one
used in many early Monkees episodes (which was unreleased until Rhino started pulling old stuff
out of the vaults, I believe). I especially love the beginning. The beat throughout is what
really keeps me hooked, and Micky's singing sounds better, as well as the music.
Tk 8. "The Poster": Ick. There's not much more than that I can say. It's a cutsy song, and
I just can't take it!
Tk 9. "P.O. Box 9847": I like this song a lot, ever since I first heard it on the Listen
to the Band box set. It's got a good beat, and I like the idea behind it (the classified ad
wording style). I love the rhythm!
Tk 10. "Magnolia Simms": I love this one! The song itself is great. Plus, Mike's
recreation of the sound of the 20s style albums (recording in mono, the crackling sound, the
skips and jumps) is terrific. For once, on a CD, I get to hear that old fashioned snap, crackle,
'n pop that draws me back to my old LPs every once in a while.
Tk 11. "Valleri": One that I've overheard, but I still like it, I just a break. It's
great, and Davy's singing is terrific.
Tk 12. "Zor and Zam": Oooo, is this a terrific song! I especially like the beginning --
just Micky and a snare drum. One of these weekends I'm gonna pull out my drum pad and try and
play this myself! Micky's singing is SO strong and beautiful! I love to sing along with this
one. The horns are great, too! Just a terrific song overall. I also love the version that was
used in the last episode of the series, "Mijacogeo" (aka "The Frodis Caper"), which has less
music and is more exclusively drumming. That version is not released anywhere -- it is exclusive to the
show's soundtrack.
Tk 13. "Alvin": According to the liner notes, this was to be BBM's "Peter Percival Patterson's
Pet Pig Porky" leading into "Daydream Believer". I love this one, standing alone. It is so cute,
and Peter sings it so well. It's a cute little story.
Tk 14. "I'm Gonna Try": This song just turns me off. I don't know why. I just can't take it.
Tk 15. "P.O. Box 9847": I love this even better than the other version. Why? The MOOG!!!
I love that thing!! I would *love* to get my hands on one of those -- I absolutely adore the
sounds it makes. I think it sounds better than the violins and viola that took over it's part
in the version that was originally released.
Tk 16. "The Girl I Left Behind Me": Listening to this again, I like it better than when I
first got the album, but it still doesn't hit me right. I like the vocals and the music
(although the violin in the instrumental really gets to me for some reason), but something just
turns me off of this song.
Tk 17. "Lady's Baby": Now that I've heard the version from Missing Links, Vol 1, I like this
song better. What turned me off of this song, hearing this version, was the baby sounds, I think.
It's a great song. There's some other differences between the two versions that I can't name but
that cause me to like the ML version better than this one. This is Peter's writing at it's best.
OVERALL: This is a somewhat disjointed album, I think due to the individualistic approach. They
were starting to disband here (and this is the last album with Peter, not counting the Head
soundtrack). In fact, with the exception of "Auntie's Municipal Court", no more than one Monkee
worked on each track. They all brought in their own studio musicians and produced the tracks
themselves, but the album notes just list "The Monkees" as producers. There is some great creativity
here, with Mike's "Tapioca Tundra", "Auntie's Municipal Court" and "Writing Wrongs". But, as
an album, it just doesn't fit together. It's a bunch of random songs stuck together and labeled
an album. It's toward the bottom of my list.
