James in Genessee Depot, WI 30 May 1998

I saw James a second time in Wisconsin.

This time, I brought the video camera! I wanted a video of James, and since James doens't mind his performances being taped, I brought my equipment!

We met in the parking lot of the Genessee Depot Cafe, where James was to be performing. Lucky thing my parents and I had decided to find the place the night before -- we shot past at 50 miles per hour and didn't realize for ten minutes that we had!! The Minnesota listers and Theresa joined us a few minutes later. There had been talk of going to Shoneys but we decided that since that was a ways back the way we'd come and the pizza place in Genessee Depot was a block away to eat at the pizza place. So we headed there (after taking a peek in the window of the Cafe from a distance, since we could spot James tuning up inside!)

We discovered that this place had the best food! The specialty of the house is dinosaur eggs, which are sandwiches (veggie, or ham & cheese -- what I got, or other combos) wrapped in bread and baked. Absolutely wonderful! Mick found us there -- we later discovered that Trey and Greg had eaten at the Shoneys -- having ducked in the Cafe when a sudden rainshower occurred and they'd left a message with the Cafe owners to tell everyone to go to Shoneys. Thing is, we didn't think to go into the cafe! We didn't want to disturb James. But we found each other eventually.

The show was wonderful! Greg and I were both videotaping and we had perfect seats for it -- just about 4 feet to James' right! My video turned out perfect (which is more than I can say for my pics -- the roll from my 35mm camera wasn't loaded right and nothing took). James did a lot of the same stuff, and told some of the same stories but it was still terrific! He told my favorite "Roddenberry Underwear" story, and the story behind one of my favorite songs, "Racing the Moon" was terrific! I discovered, though, that I needed to tape at SLP to get everything in (missed the end of "Three Monkeys") and I need a tripod! I bought The Envoy and Simpatico and got them signed.

My mom and I fell in love with Genessee Depot -- we want to make sure to go see James next time he plays there! And I'd love to have lunch there one day -- it's such a cute little cafe!

Then, the real fun started afterwards! All the pics that turned out (all three) were taken then, when we went to the bar next to the pizza place till nearly 2 AM. James had a beer, chatted with us, and played a round of pool. I don't understand the game very well but I think he lost . . . but I may be wrong! It was fun watching, though, especially when he did some trick shots!
